Steve Ratchen
Whether playing in the progressive metal band Alchemy X, or the
power metal band Vyndykator, bassist Steve Ratchen defies description.
Stylistically, Ratchen is a left-handed player who plays right-handed
basses, upside down no less, so that the higher strings are on top!
This configuration contributes to both the complexity and unique
nature of the music he writes and plays with both acts. Critically
compared to the likes of Dream Theatre's Jon Myung and Rush's Geddy
Lee amongst others, Ratchen has never played bass guitar as a support
instrument, but rather as an integral and up front element. One
can rarely listen to either an Alchemy X or Vyndykator record and
not notice his furious riffing, subtle yet melodic soloing, and
altogether different approach to the instrument. In 1999, just after
the release of Alchemy X's "A Delicate Balance" album,
Ratchen discovered the Conklin GT-7 at a Guitar Center, bought one
on impulse and the rest is history.
"I've been playing bass guitar for over 20 years, and with
my, shall we say, "odd" method, I've run into all sorts
of physical problems with most basses. That's certainly not because
there was anything wrong in their design, as they were made to be
played right-handed. Either the body itself would cause discomfort,
or the jack or active electronics would be compromised from the
weight of my arm constantly resting there, but suffice to say, I
was always worried about the physical constraints my playing would
cause. When I bought the Conklin GT-7, I immediately noticed how
easy and effortless it felt to play, even though it's an immense
physical presence in it's own right! The locking jack and Bartolini
electronics have put my mind at ease, and I've had nothing but success
playing my GT-7 for over 4 years now! I use it exclusively when
touring, and played it on every track of both the new AX and Vyn
records! While it's always fun to try new basses, I have no desire
to play anything but Conklin, whether in the studio or on the road.
Bill Conklin is one of the best luthiers in the business, and an
extremely nice and personable guy. The craftsmanship and quality
he and the staff at Conklin put into their products is apparent,
and really adds to my experience as a writer/player!"
